An ileostomy bag is an artificial pouching system used for the collection of waste. This bag is usually made to order keeping in mind the patient’s requirements. Individuals who have undergone an ileostomy are prescribed this pouching system. The patient has to wear a pouch, irrespective of the surgery or Ileostomy being a temporary, or permanent procedure. What then is an ileostomy, and what does this procedure entail? An ileostomy is an ostomy where a hole is created surgically on the stomach of the patient, the lowest part of the ileum or the small intestine is brought in to form a stoma. This hole is usually made on the lower right end of the stomach as the body is unable to secrete waste. Colostomy surgery, has a common name, where it is referred to as ‘bowel diversion surgery’. This procedure can either be permanent or temporary, depending upon the severity of the disease. A stoma is a hole that is made surgically on the abdominal wall of a person for the collection of bodily waste. People of all ages can have a stoma as it is not age related. It is of prime importance that proper stoma care be taken post an ostomy. The stoma will, resemble the inside of a mouth. It is usually pink and moist or wet. A stoma is mostly swollen post-surgery but, let this not irk you, for the swelling will gradually reduce in time, which is usually anywhere between 4 to 8 weeks. As the stoma does not possess any nerves, there is absolutely no sensation upon touch, which is a joy. Stomas are never similar and vary from person to person, as well as in shape and size. Hygiene is of prime importance and the stoma should be cleaned using care and always kept dry.

When the body is unable to secrete waste, a surgical procedure or an urostomy is performed wherein, the flow of urine is diverted into a stoma. Body waste like urine, then bypasses the bladder, passing through the stoma and into an urostomy bag.  Patients are advised a urostomy when suffering from lethal diseases like cancer, trauma or a urinary system defect from birth. This is a permanent procedure, and cannot be reversed. Patients having undergone an urostomy require an urostomy bag that is custom made and ostomy relevant, which is then fitted onto the stoma snugly. This bag must be cleaned periodically or changed when required.

An ostomy brings out the same exact reaction where immense fear is felt. There are three types of ostomy namely, Ileostomy and urostomy and colostomy as you are aware.
